Panvel Civic Tax Dispute Housing Federation Challenges PMC Penalties

In the ongoing saga of property tax disputes between citizens and the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Kharghar Co-op Housing Societies Federation Ltd has taken a stand against what it perceives as unjust penalties levied by the civic body. Alleging a contradiction with the interim order of the Supreme Court dated May 17, the federation has accused the PMC of intentionally imposing penalties on property tax bills spanning three years.

The federation welcomed the interim order from the Supreme Court, expressing its intention to comply by urging residents to settle their property tax dues. However, it demanded that the PMC issue revised bills in alignment with the court’s directive. Specifically, the federation objected to the PMC’s decision to retrospectively impose penalties dating back to 2016, which it believes contravenes the spirit of the court’s order.

In response, the PMC clarified its stance, stating that the Supreme Court had not yet issued a final ruling on the demand from 2016. However, it affirmed its commitment to abide by the court’s directives, acknowledging the issuance of revised bills from 2021 onwards to property owners.

Despite the PMC’s efforts to address the situation and rectify billing discrepancies, a significant number of property owners remain in default, with approximately ₹750 crore in outstanding dues to the civic body. This ongoing financial impasse underscores the complexity and contentious nature of property tax enforcement in the region.

Amidst escalating tensions, the Kharghar Co-op Housing Societies Federation Ltd has taken a firm stance against what it perceives as an unfair imposition of penalties, signaling its intent to pursue legal action if necessary. The threat of contempt of court notices looms large, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the stakes involved for both the PMC and the aggrieved property owners.

As the dispute unfolds, stakeholders await further developments and potential resolutions to alleviate the burden on property owners and restore harmony between the PMC and the community it serves.
