Hyderabad’s Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will conduct Project Udvasana across 29 participating temples on August 29, offering citizens a respectful and environmentally responsible way to dispose of worshipped sacred items.
The collection drive will be held from 8:30 am to 11 am, with residents encouraged to bring old idols, deity photographs, damaged religious frames, calendars and other sacred materials to participating temples. Project Udvasana aims to prevent worshipped items from being discarded with general waste or immersed in water bodies. GHMC has asked residents to identify the participating temple closest to their homes and hand over sacred materials at the designated collection centres. The list of all 29 participating temples can be accessed through the QR code shared as part of the campaign.
The initiative builds on earlier collection drives in which deity photographs, damaged frames, idols, calendars and other devotional materials were gathered for responsible handling. GHMC has also invited citizens to participate as volunteers and assist with collection activities at participating temples. Collected materials will be segregated, with suitable items directed towards reuse or responsible recycling where possible. The approach is intended to create a more organised system for managing worshipped sacred materials.
The August 29 drive forms part of GHMC’s broader efforts to combine civic waste management with environmental responsibility. GHMC has separately mentioned volunteer timings of 9:30 am to 2 pm, while the public collection period specified for the drive is 8:30 am to 11 am.
