Noida: Commuters using Noida’s metro network are likely to benefit from a major pedestrian infrastructure upgrade next month, with the city’s first Noida Skywalk expected to open by mid-August. The elevated walkway will connect the Blue Line station at Sector 52 with the Aqua Line station at Sector 51, reducing dependence on road-level crossings and strengthening one of the region’s busiest public transport interchanges.
The project marks an important shift in how rapidly growing urban centres are approaching first- and last-mile connectivity. Rather than focusing solely on expanding rail infrastructure, authorities are increasingly investing in pedestrian-friendly links that improve accessibility, reduce travel time and encourage greater use of public transport. Urban mobility experts argue that such interventions can significantly enhance commuter safety while making multimodal journeys more seamless. Officials overseeing the project indicate that construction has entered its final phase after engineering adjustments were completed. The elevated corridor has been redesigned to integrate directly with the lift access of the adjoining metro station, improving convenience for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers carrying luggage. These design modifications have also resulted in a longer structure than initially planned. Developed at an estimated investment of around ₹45 crore, the Noida Skywalk is expected to accommodate high pedestrian volumes through its wide passageway while incorporating features such as improved lighting, secure railings and barrier-free access.
These elements are increasingly becoming standard requirements in urban infrastructure projects aimed at creating safer public spaces throughout the day. Construction on the corridor began in 2023 as part of broader efforts to improve connectivity between the two metro networks. At present, passengers moving between the Blue and Aqua Lines rely on ground-level pedestrian routes, which often experience congestion during peak travel hours. The elevated connection is expected to reduce crowding while providing a more direct and weather-protected transfer option. Urban planners note that pedestrian infrastructure frequently receives less attention than large transport projects despite playing a decisive role in determining whether residents choose public transit over private vehicles.
