Noida authorities are preparing a new traffic interchange near the Bhangel Elevated Road corridor in an effort to address long-standing congestion and improve east-west urban connectivity in one of the National Capital Region’s fastest-growing residential belts. The proposed diamond-shaped interchange, estimated to cost around Rs 66 crore, is expected to streamline vehicle movement between the elevated corridor and Vishwakarma Road near Sector 107.
Urban transport officials said the project has been designed to eliminate bottlenecks that have persisted since the elevated road became operational. The current traffic arrangement has struggled to handle increasing commuter volumes, particularly during peak office hours when vehicles exiting the corridor experience delays and merging conflicts. The planned Noida diamond interchange will include four directional ramps arranged in a grade-separated diamond layout, allowing uninterrupted traffic flow between the elevated structure and surrounding arterial roads. Infrastructure planners believe the intervention could reduce pressure on adjoining intersections while improving travel reliability for commuters moving between residential sectors, commercial clusters and the Noida-Greater Noida corridor. The Bhangel Elevated Road was originally envisioned as a mobility solution for heavily congested stretches connecting southern Noida neighbourhoods.
However, rapid urban expansion, rising vehicle ownership and increased real estate activity in nearby sectors have intensified traffic demand beyond earlier projections. Urban mobility experts say the new interchange reflects a broader shift towards retrofitting transport infrastructure rather than relying solely on linear road expansion. According to officials familiar with the project timeline, construction is expected to take around 18 months once work begins. Authorities are likely to phase execution to minimise disruption along one of the city’s busiest commuter routes. The interchange is also expected to improve access for residents travelling towards institutional zones, healthcare facilities and mixed-use developments emerging across the area. Transport analysts note that while elevated roads and flyover systems can temporarily ease congestion, long-term mobility resilience in rapidly urbanising NCR cities will depend on integrated planning that combines road engineering with stronger public transport networks, pedestrian infrastructure and transit-oriented development. Without these parallel investments, experts warn that road capacity enhancements may eventually trigger higher private vehicle dependency.
The Noida diamond interchange project arrives at a time when regional authorities are accelerating infrastructure upgrades linked to airport-led growth and intercity connectivity expansion across western Uttar Pradesh. Improved junction management is increasingly being seen as critical to sustaining economic productivity and reducing fuel wastage caused by prolonged idling and traffic queues. Environmental planners also emphasise the need for construction safeguards around dust management, drainage systems and heat mitigation, particularly as NCR cities continue to face worsening air quality and rising summer temperatures. Sustainable infrastructure execution, they argue, is becoming as important as the mobility outcome itself. For Noida’s growing commuter population, the success of the interchange will ultimately depend not only on faster travel times, but also on whether the project can support safer, more efficient and future-ready urban movement across the city.
