Noida Airport Link Expands Public Transport Access
As commercial operations at Noida International Airport prepare to begin later this month, authorities in Noida and Greater Noida are moving to strengthen last-mile public transport with a new fleet of electric double-decker buses aimed at connecting residential and business districts to the upcoming aviation hub.
The planned rollout, scheduled from mid-June, is expected to provide one of the region’s first large-scale low-emission airport transit systems linking urban centres directly with Jewar. Urban planners say the initiative could help reduce dependence on private vehicles along the rapidly urbanising Noida-Greater Noida corridor, where rising traffic congestion and worsening air quality have become major civic concerns. According to officials familiar with the transport plan, around 30 electric buses will be introduced in phases, with a dedicated set operating between Noida and the airport zone. The service is expected to run through the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, creating a direct mobility corridor between residential clusters, commercial districts and the new airport. The airport bus network is also being positioned as a low-cost public transport alternative for daily commuters, airport workers and passengers. Authorities indicated that fares would remain within an affordable range, with the highest fare capped at ₹50 for the full journey from central Noida to Jewar.
Mobility experts note that affordable airport connectivity remains a critical gap in most Indian cities, where airport access is often dominated by taxis and private vehicles. The timing of the launch aligns with preparations for commercial flight operations at Noida International Airport, which is expected to emerge as a major aviation and logistics gateway for northern India. Beyond passenger movement, the project is anticipated to influence real estate growth, warehousing activity and employment generation across western Uttar Pradesh. However, transport analysts caution that the long-term success of the airport bus system will depend on frequency, integration with metro and regional rail services, and safe pedestrian access near bus stops. Without multimodal coordination, public transport adoption could remain limited despite lower fares and cleaner vehicle technology. The introduction of electric buses also reflects a broader shift among NCR cities towards cleaner urban mobility systems.
Several municipal bodies across the region are increasingly investing in electric fleets as part of efforts to lower transport emissions and comply with evolving climate and air-quality targets. The launch comes at a time when weather fluctuations across Delhi NCR have again highlighted the environmental pressures facing the region. Recent rainfall and hailstorms brought temporary relief from rising temperatures, while meteorological data showed intermittent showers helped moderate extreme heat conditions during early April. Urban climate researchers argue that expanding sustainable public transport, alongside heat-resilient infrastructure, will become increasingly important as NCR cities confront more frequent weather variability and rapid urban expansion. With airport operations and supporting infrastructure now moving simultaneously, the coming months are expected to test whether the region can build a more connected and citizen-oriented mobility network around one of India’s largest greenfield aviation projects.
