NMMC Sets October 22 Deadline for Civic E-Waste Collection

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation will conduct a special e-waste collection drive at its headquarters on October 22, directing civic departments to identify and hand over unused, faulty and obsolete electronic and electrical equipment for scientific disposal.

The drive will cover equipment held at NMMC headquarters, offices and establishments under the civic body’s jurisdiction. The collected material will be deposited at a location designated by the Solid Waste Management Department on October 22.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Pawar has issued instructions to all municipal departments through the Solid Waste Management Department. Each department has been asked to prepare a detailed, item-wise inventory of its e-waste before handing over the material.

The inventory must include the name and quantity of each item, its condition, the asset number where available and the concerned department’s name. The process is intended to establish a record of the obsolete equipment being removed from civic premises and to support its disposal under the applicable rules.

The collection will include computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, computer mice, uninterruptible power supply units, batteries, electrical appliances, telephone sets, networking equipment and other electronic items. Equipment that must first be written off from official records will require a separate approval process.

The instructions state that no government property can be handed over for disposal without approval from the competent authority. Departments have therefore been asked to complete the required procedures before transferring civic equipment to the collection point.

The initiative is being organised under Special Campaign 6.0 and follows guidelines issued by the Centre’s Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances and the Ministry of Mines. NMMC has also linked the exercise to waste segregation under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

NMMC officers and employees will be allowed to voluntarily deposit electronic waste from their homes as part of the drive. The list of accepted household items includes black-and-white and colour televisions, LCD, LED and plasma televisions, air conditioners with capacities of one tonne and 1.5 tonnes, desktop computers, laptops, printers, keyboards, mice, toner cartridges, RAM and other computer components.

Mobile phones, smartphones, feature phones, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and dishwashers will also be accepted. Other listed items include fans, geysers, stabilisers, UPS units, heaters, toasters, mixer-grinders, induction cooktops, tape recorders, radios, speakers, video cassette recorders, DVD players and routers.

The civic body said the objective is to ensure that collected electronic waste is disposed of scientifically and to prevent environmental damage associated with discarded electrical and electronic equipment. Departments are expected to complete their inventories and bring eligible material to the designated location on October 22.
