NHAI Expedites Riverbed Drilling for Key Segment of Port-Maduravoyal Corridor

In a significant stride toward the completion of the 20.9-kilometre Port-Maduravoyal elevated expressway corridor, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced drilling activities in sections of the Cooum River, particularly around the western neighbourhoods such as Aminjikarai and Anna Nagar.

The initiative involves preparing the riverbed for the construction of the elevated expressway corridor, with workers actively engaged in soil-related activities within the river. Approximately 95% of the soil testing has been concluded, initiating the piling process near Aminjikarai, where the foundation beneath the river is expected to extend for 35 metres. NHAI officials have shared that the piling work will progress within the river towards the port area, covering a stretch of 15.5 kilometres out of the total 20.9 kilometres planned for the corridor.

Highlighting the project’s timeline, NHAI officials stated that foundation works, including setting up the pile cap and the underwater activities, are scheduled for completion by June 2025. Out of the planned 650 pillars for the corridor, a significant portion, totalling 525, will be erected within the river. Addressing environmental concerns, the water resources department has obtained a written assurance from NHAI that all approach lanes created within the river will be removed before the onset of the monsoon. Further, NHAI officials mentioned plans for a velocity study on the pile and pillar structures within the river, ensuring minimal water deviation. Despite the complexity of the project, NHAI officials expressed confidence in managing potential water deviations by implementing robust flood abetment walls, particularly in areas prone to water encroachment. Efforts are underway to expedite court cases aimed at removing encroachments, providing additional buffer space for the ambitious expressway project. Signed as a MoU in 2022, the ₹5,885-crore Port-Maduravoyal corridor project, initiated in 2009, signifies a crucial step forward in enhancing transportation infrastructure, emphasising the NHAI’s commitment to strategic and sustainable development.
