West Bengal has launched Next Gen Post Offices at five locations, bringing free Wi-Fi, printing facilities, contemporary seating and refreshments into postal premises aimed at attracting younger users and reconnecting them with traditional postal services.
The upgraded facilities are currently available at IIT Kharagpur, Kolkata University, Jadavpur University, Haldia Institute of Technology and Kalyani. The initiative was announced during the start of National Postal Week alongside World Post Day, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal.
Each upgraded post office is expected to cost approximately ₹20 lakh. In addition to postal services, the premises will include modern chairs and tables, sofas, tea and coffee facilities, and access to magazines and newspapers. The design is intended to make the post office a more usable and welcoming space for students and other younger members of the public.
Ashok Kumar, Chief Postmaster General of the West Bengal Circle, said during the announcement that Bardhaman University, Rabindra Bharati University and Visva-Bharati University had also expressed interest in adopting the model. The report did not specify when those locations would receive the upgraded facilities.
Riju Gangopadhyay, Postmaster General responsible for South Bengal and Sikkim, said the objective was to create an environment that could become attractive to the next generation while encouraging young people to continue writing letters. The initiative therefore combines a physical redesign of postal premises with an effort to keep traditional communication services relevant in an increasingly digital environment.
The postal department is also considering a digitally enabled locker post office at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. The report said similar facilities are available in Mumbai, but it did not provide details of the proposed locker system or its implementation timeline.
Beyond the five institutional locations, the department is planning to modernise the Kankurgachi Sub Post Office model at post offices in Ballygunge and Sarat Bose Road. The report did not clarify whether these upgrades will follow the same ₹20 lakh cost structure or include the full set of amenities introduced at the Next Gen facilities.
The department also outlined a wider effort to expand its role in public services and logistics. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with the West Bengal government for distributing Ayushman Bharat cards. In partnership with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company, it plans to use Speed Post to send farmers and landowners information about the benefits and subsidies associated with solar power.
Ashok Kumar also said the postal department would work with the agriculture department to deliver seeds through its logistics network. The stated aim is to limit the role of intermediaries in these transactions, although the report did not provide details about the delivery system, participating districts or launch schedule.
The department has identified e-commerce as a key priority as it seeks to expand beyond conventional mail services. The Next Gen Post Office rollout places that transition in a physical setting, using upgraded public-facing spaces and digital facilities to combine postal access, logistics and selected government services. Further implementation details for the proposed university and city post-office expansions are yet to be announced.
