New Town Traffic Police Assault Case: 3 Teachers Arrested

Three private-school teachers have been arrested after allegedly assaulting an on-duty traffic sergeant in New Town, West Bengal, following a dispute over wrong-lane motorcycle driving and a collision with an app cab, police said. The incident took place in the Nopara area on Wednesday night.

According to the report by Anandabazar, the three men were travelling on a single motorcycle when it allegedly collided with an app-based taxi while being driven on the wrong side of the road. An argument then began between the men and the cab driver. The traffic sergeant reached the spot after being informed about the dispute.

Police allege that the argument continued after the officer arrived and that the three men attacked him during the confrontation. The officer was allegedly pushed to the road and beaten. One of the accused men is also alleged to have struck the sergeant on the head with a helmet.

The incident was subsequently reported to Eco Park police station. Officers reached the location and arrested the three men. They have been identified as Manmohan Behera, Nitish Kumar Sahu and Shubhajit Chakraborty.

Police said Behera and Nitish are from Odisha, while Chakraborty is a resident of Raiganj in North Dinajpur district. The three men were staying in the New Town area for work and were employed as teachers at a private school, according to the report.

The arrests bring a road-safety dispute into the jurisdiction of both traffic enforcement and criminal investigation. The initial altercation reportedly began after the alleged wrong-lane movement and collision, before escalating into a confrontation involving a public official performing traffic duty. The supplied report does not specify the extent of the sergeant’s injuries or the legal sections invoked in the case.

The accused men underwent medical examinations and were produced before the Barasat court on Thursday. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the alleged attack on the traffic sergeant and the events preceding the arrests.
