New Biodiversity Parks to Enhance VIP Road

Kolkata: Following the successful transformation of a burrow pit into a thriving biodiversity park from Bangur to Dum Dum Park off VIP Road, the state Public Works Department (PWD) has unveiled plans to develop three additional biodiversity parks along the water bodies between Lake Town and Bangur, Dakshindari, and Golaghata. This initiative aims to enhance the green landscape and create open-air leisure spots for the city’s residents.

The state PWD has already prepared a detailed blueprint for these projects, which has been submitted to the state government for approval. “The proposals have been cleared, and detailed project reports have been presented to the state government. Our plan is to develop these water body stretches off VIP Road into biodiversity parks similar to the successful Bangur to Dum Dum Park stretch,” said an official. The existing park has become a popular evening destination for those seeking a leisurely stroll and fresh air.

The Lake Town to Bangur water body stretch, which was renovated a few years ago, did not maintain its upgraded condition for long. Now, a 500-meter-long and 50-meter-wide stretch at Dakshindari, along with a large pond and the Debi Ghat at Golaghata, have been included in the detailed project reports for new biodiversity parks. The transformation of the biodiversity park at Bangur serves as a model for these new projects. Originally a neglected burrow pit with rampant waste dumping, the area underwent a significant rejuvenation. The water body was thoroughly dredged and cleaned, and a long pathway was constructed along with illuminative lighting and extensive plantation. Various tree species were planted on both sides of the water body, creating a green oasis in the urban environment. “We plan to develop the three newly identified water body stretches in a similar manner,” an official added.

Additionally, officials have identified several vacant plots along VIP Road that could be beautified into small parks and gardens. “There are many vacant plots on the stretch from Kestopur to Baguiati Joramandir that could be developed into children’s parks or gardens, providing spaces for people to stroll and spend their leisure time,” another official suggested.

The development of these biodiversity parks is not just about increasing greenery but also about providing the community with accessible recreational areas. The planned parks will contribute to the city’s ecological balance while offering residents a much-needed respite from urban life. The PWD’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban development, recognising the importance of integrating green spaces into the city’s infrastructure. As the state government reviews the detailed project reports, the residents of Kolkata can look forward to a future where nature and urban life coexist harmoniously, bringing ecological and recreational benefits to the heart of the city.
