NDMC’s Vision for Solar-Powered City by 2026
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced plans to install solar panels on every rooftop in the area by 2026. The decision was revealed at the first council meeting following the Delhi Assembly elections, with officials emphasising the importance of renewable energy for the future of the city. The initiative will focus on encouraging the adoption of solar power, with subsidies that match those offered by the central government to facilitate the transition for residents and businesses.
This move is part of the NDMC’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources and make the civic body fully self-sustainable within the next few years. The proposal will be formally discussed in the next council meeting, with a final decision on the project’s rollout expected soon.In addition to the solar initiative, NDMC has been expanding its range of civic measures to improve the quality of life in the capital.
A significant step forward is the expansion of night sweeping, which was first launched in Khan Market and has now been extended to five locations. This, coupled with a renewed commitment to strict monitoring of contracted agencies, will ensure better cleanliness and efficiency. With an eye on water management, NDMC is also prioritising rainwater harvesting and enhancing measures to combat waterlogging across the city. A new anti-encroachment drive and plans for city-wide CCTV surveillance will further strengthen security and urban management.
Moreover, experts within the NDMC have outlined initiatives to expand essential services, including a project to install new water connections across multiple areas, benefiting thousands of residents. Efforts are also being made to secure electricity at more affordable rates to reduce high power bills, which have been a major concern for residents and businesses alike. While these plans aim to propel Delhi towards a greener, more sustainable future, it remains to be seen how successfully these ambitious projects will be implemented within the proposed timelines.
