Nandigram Development Projects Get Push With Rail Link, Hospital Plan

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a package of proposed Nandigram development projects, including a railway connection, a super-speciality hospital and a government guest house for pilgrims and visitors to the region.

Addressing a Durga Puja gathering organised by Yuba Dhara Sporting Club on Shashthi, Adhikari said improving healthcare, transport and accommodation would be among his priorities for Nandigram. His remarks came days after his victory in the Nandigram bypoll, according to The Statesman.

“Nandigram has entrusted me with a huge responsibility. We have undertaken small works here, but major projects also need to be taken up,” Adhikari said, outlining the proposed infrastructure and public-service expansion.

The chief minister said efforts would be made to ensure that residents could travel by train. The announcement did not specify the proposed route, project cost, implementing agency or construction timeline. He also said a proposed super-speciality hospital should become operational, but details about its current construction status and opening schedule were not provided in the report.

Adhikari additionally announced plans to establish a Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Nandigram to provide lower-cost medicines, particularly for patients managing hypertension and diabetes. He said people currently spending between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 a month on medicines could potentially buy medicines worth Rs 2,000 for around Rs 100 through the generic medicine initiative.

Accommodation has also emerged as a stated priority. Adhikari said existing facilities were inadequate for the growing number of pilgrims and visitors arriving in Nandigram during religious occasions. He proposed a large government guest house that would allow visitors to stay overnight and said the administration would need to make better arrangements for them.

The chief minister also referred to road improvements, saying he had raised the issue with the district police administration. The report did not identify the roads under consideration, the proposed works or the authority responsible for execution.

Alongside the infrastructure announcements, Adhikari said economically distressed families in Nandigram would receive benefits worth between Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000 a month through various welfare schemes. He said more than 70,000 women had already been brought under initiatives providing financial support, while applications from around 5,000 additional women were being examined. Of those applications, he said another 4,000 to 5,000 beneficiaries could potentially receive support.

Housing assistance was another component of the announcement. Adhikari referred to the allocation of around 4,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and said further efforts would be made to ensure that eligible residents received assistance. The report did not specify whether the allocation referred to completed houses, sanctioned units or beneficiaries approved for support.

The proposed rail link, hospital and guest house would address different layers of Nandigram’s urban and regional infrastructure needs: mobility, healthcare access and visitor accommodation. However, the announcement currently remains at the stage of stated government priorities, with no project schedules, budgets or implementation milestones disclosed in the report.

Adhikari concluded by invoking Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy of serving humanity and said public service should remain central to governance. The next steps will depend on the government setting out project details, administrative responsibilities and timelines for the proposed works.
