Nagpur Private Bus Accident Kills Pedestrian Near Baidyanath Chowk

A 28-year-old pedestrian was killed after a speeding private travels bus hit him near Baidyanath Chowk in Nagpur on Thursday night, while the driver allegedly fled the scene, according to Imambada police. The crash has led to a case for causing death by rash and negligent driving.

The deceased, identified as Shubham Rangari, was crossing the road near a traffic signal at around 10.45 pm when the bus struck him, the police said. Rangari suffered severe injuries and was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police invoked bailable provisions against the bus driver, who allegedly left the spot after the collision. Imambada police have registered a case against the driver under provisions relating to rash and negligent driving causing death. The report did not state whether the driver had been arrested or whether the bus had been seized.

The death is the second reported fatal accident involving a private travels bus in Nagpur within a week. Earlier, Sarvesh Kashilekar, 34, died after being hit by a private travels bus in the Bajaj Nagar area, according to the police information cited in the report.

The two incidents have brought renewed attention to the safety risks faced by pedestrians and other road users around city traffic corridors where private buses operate. In the Baidyanath Chowk crash, the pedestrian was crossing near a signal when the collision occurred, but the available police account does not provide further details about the signal phase, road conditions, bus speed or traffic enforcement at the location.

The case also highlights the immediate administrative chain that follows a fatal road crash: police investigation, medical confirmation of death and action under criminal law against the driver. The available report does not specify whether transport authorities will conduct a separate inspection of the vehicle, review the operator’s permits or examine the driver’s licence and duty records.

The investigation will determine the circumstances of the collision and the driver’s alleged flight from the scene. Further official action would be expected to establish how the bus was being operated, whether any safety or traffic violations occurred and whether additional measures are required at the Baidyanath Chowk location.
