Mysuru Waste Dump Cleared at Lalithadripura After Public Outcry

Mysuru authorities have cleared hundreds of tonnes of accumulated waste from roadsides around Lalithadripura after persistent public complaints, with officials now directed to prevent fresh dumping and improve the area’s streetscape.

District in-charge and Urban Development Minister Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah inspected the site on Friday after municipal and Mysuru Development Authority officials completed the clean-up. The waste had reportedly remained piled up for several years, causing inconvenience to residents and other road users.

The issue had drawn wider attention after images of the garbage-strewn area circulated extensively on social media, prompting strong public dissatisfaction and demands for immediate action. Following an earlier inspection, the minister had instructed officials to remove the waste and clean the location completely.

The clean-up was carried out by officials of the Mysuru City Corporation and the Mysuru Development Authority. During Friday’s inspection, Siddaramaiah directed authorities to take preventive measures so that the cleared site does not again become an informal dumping ground.

The Mysuru Development Authority has installed closed-circuit television cameras in the cleaned area to monitor dumping. The minister also directed the Alanhalli Gram Panchayat, Rammanahalli Town Panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation and Mysuru Development Authority to coordinate their work and maintain continuous surveillance.

Siddaramaiah instructed officials to consider building a pedestrian footpath along the roadside and planting ornamental greenery on both sides of the road. He also called for measures to improve the appearance of the wider area, according to the report.

Officials were asked to conduct public awareness activities and work with local residents to maintain cleanliness. The minister said that people found dumping waste at the location after the awareness efforts should be identified and dealt with. He directed the authorities to impose fines on violators and take stricter legal action where necessary.

The incident highlights the coordination challenge created when a public space falls within the operating areas of several local bodies. The directions issued after the clearance place responsibility on all four institutions to prevent the return of the waste problem and maintain the site.

Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner M.K. Savitha and Mysuru Development Authority Commissioner Mahesh were among those present during the inspection. The authorities’ next steps are the continued monitoring of the cleaned site, enforcement against illegal dumping and action on the proposed footpath and roadside landscaping.
