Mysuru to Gain South Karnataka Postal Headquarters After Centre’s Nod

The Union government has given in-principle approval to relocate the South Karnataka Postal Circle headquarters from Bengaluru to Mysuru, a move that could shift a major regional administrative function beyond the state capital. The relocation will begin only after the required procedures are completed and a suitable building is arranged in Mysuru.

Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar said Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia confirmed the development in an official letter dated October 7. The minister’s letter followed a request submitted by the MP to the Union government on August 7.

According to the information released by the MP, the Department of Posts considered the request as part of a process to restructure its administrative arrangements and create a more streamlined and balanced system of governance. The approval announced at this stage is described as being in principle, rather than as a completed relocation order.

The department has indicated that the relocation process will be taken up after all necessary procedures are completed and an appropriate building is made available for the regional office. The supplied announcement does not specify the proposed building, the number of employees to be shifted, the financial cost, or a final date for moving the headquarters.

The South Karnataka Postal Circle currently has its headquarters in Bengaluru. Shifting it to Mysuru would place the city at the centre of the postal administration for the southern Karnataka region. The announcement, however, does not detail how the relocation would affect the existing Bengaluru office, the distribution of responsibilities between the two cities, or postal services available to residents.

Yaduveer said the proposed move would strengthen Mysuru’s administrative importance and support efforts to decentralise major government offices beyond Bengaluru. He described the relocation as a step that could contribute to regional development. The announcement also stated that coordination would be carried out with the officials concerned as the process advances.

The next stage is therefore administrative rather than operational: the Department of Posts must complete the required formalities and arrange a suitable premises before the relocation can be implemented. No further timeline was provided in the announcement.
