Following the opening of the northbound carriageway of Mumbai’s Coastal Road, a significant uptick in traffic has been recorded, with 26,170 vehicles utilising the route on its second operational day. This marks a notable increase from the initial count of 20,450 vehicles observed on the first day.
The peak traffic hours were observed between 10-11 pm, with 3,180 vehicles, highlighting the route’s popularity during late evening hours. Earlier in the evening, between 9-10 pm, approximately 3,000 vehicles were recorded, demonstrating sustained usage throughout the evening rush. Between 8-9 pm, the road saw 2,080 vehicles, indicating a steady flow of commuters benefiting from reduced travel times.
Currently, vehicle counting along the northbound tunnel is conducted manually, pending the installation of an automated vehicle counter at its entry and exit points. The Coastal Road’s northbound stretch serves commuters travelling from Marine Drive up to Haji Ali, significantly cutting down travel durations between these points.
Authorities overseeing the Coastal Road project are considering enhancements such as increased signage near interchanges to improve navigational clarity for motorists. The southbound segment of the Coastal Road became operational earlier this year, enhancing connectivity in Mumbai just before the onset of the Lok Sabha polls.
