Mumbais Carnac Bridge Reopens After Reconstruction

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully completed the reconstruction of the historic Carnac Bridge near Masjid Bunder station. The main construction work was concluded on June 10, 2025, ahead of the scheduled deadline, with final finishing tasks such as road markings, painting, street lighting, and signboards expected to be completed by June 14, 2025. The original Carnac Bridge, built over 150 years ago, was declared unsafe and dismantled in November 2022 following a comprehensive operation by the Central Railway.

Recognising the critical need for this vital east-west link, the BMC took charge of the reconstruction, aiming to restore connectivity between key areas such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mohammad Ali Road, and Crawford Market. The new bridge spans a total length of 328 metres, with approximately 70 metres falling within railway jurisdiction. It features two robust steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes, supported on reinforced cement concrete (RCC) piers. The installation of these heavy girders over active railway tracks was a complex operation, requiring meticulous planning and coordination with the Central Railway to ensure safety and minimise disruptions .

In addition to the structural enhancements, the bridge incorporates modern features aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. The approach roads on both the eastern and western sides have been upgraded, with new pavements, anti-crash barriers, and noise barriers installed to mitigate environmental impact. The bridge’s design also includes provisions for pedestrian movement, ensuring accessibility for all users. The BMC has scheduled a load test for June 13, 2025, to assess the bridge’s structural integrity under operational conditions. The results of this test, expected by June 15, 2025, will inform the final decision regarding the opening of the bridge for public use .

This project underscores the BMC’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Mumbai’s residents. By completing the reconstruction ahead of schedule, the BMC has demonstrated effective project management and responsiveness to the city’s transportation needs. The reopening of the Carnac Bridge is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion in the surrounding areas and provide a more efficient route for commuters. As Mumbai continues to grow, initiatives like the Carnac Bridge reconstruction are crucial in ensuring that the city’s infrastructure keeps pace with its development. The successful completion of this project serves as a model for future urban redevelopment efforts, highlighting the importance of timely execution, collaboration between agencies, and a focus on sustainable and inclusive design.
