Mumbai Water Supply Faces Planned Maintenance Disruption
Parts of Mumbai experienced a temporary reduction in drinking water supply after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook scheduled maintenance at a key pumping facility feeding the city’s treatment network. While the disruption affected water availability for nearly a day, the upgrade is intended to improve the reliability and safety of one of Mumbai’s critical water distribution systems. The planned maintenance involved replacing ageing high-voltage electrical control panels at the Mumbai-3A Pumping Station in Panjrapur, a crucial installation that transfers raw water to the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant. To carry out the electrical upgrade safely, pumping operations were suspended for around 20 hours, resulting in an estimated 15 per cent reduction in water supply across several parts of the city, including western and eastern suburbs.
The Mumbai Water Supply interruption occurred at a time when the city was already operating under water conservation measures introduced earlier in the monsoon season. Although reservoir levels have improved significantly following sustained rainfall, civic authorities continue to manage water distribution cautiously to maintain adequate reserves and ensure operational stability across the network. The Panjrapur pumping station serves as a vital link between Mumbai’s reservoir network and the city’s primary treatment facility. Any interruption at this stage temporarily affects downstream distribution, making advance planning and public communication essential to minimise inconvenience for households, businesses and institutions.
