Mumbai Water Alert: BMC Orders 7-Day Boiling, Filtering

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has advised residents in several Mumbai civic wards, parts of the eastern suburbs and areas of Thane and Bhiwandi supplied by the civic body to boil and filter drinking water for seven days from the commissioning of Compartment No. 2 of the Yewai balancing reservoir on October 28.

The precautionary advisory follows the completion of repair work on the reservoir compartment at the Pise-Panjrapur complex. The BMC said the commissioning process could potentially cause changes in the quality of water supplied to Mumbai city, the eastern suburbs and parts of Thane and Bhiwandi that receive water through its network.

Residents in the affected areas have been asked to use boiled and filtered water for drinking during the advisory period. The civic administration has appealed to households and establishments to comply with the precautionary measure while the reservoir compartment is brought back into service.

In Mumbai city, the advisory covers A Ward, including the Naval Dockyard and BPT areas, as well as the entire B Ward, E Ward, F-South Ward and F-North Ward. The listed areas include several parts of the city supplied through the BMC’s water distribution system.

The eastern suburban areas covered by the advisory include Mulund East and Mulund West in T Ward; Bhandup, Nahur, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli East in S Ward; Vikhroli, Ghatkopar East and Ghatkopar in N Ward; Kurla East in L Ward; and the entirety of M-East and M-West wards.

The same precaution has been extended to areas of Thane and Bhiwandi that receive water supplied by the BMC. The advisory is linked specifically to the reservoir commissioning process and is scheduled to remain in effect for the next seven days.

A separate water-supply disruption has also been scheduled in Thane. The Thane Municipal Corporation will implement a 10 per cent water cut across its jurisdiction every Wednesday as part of a revised water-management plan. The first shutdown is scheduled from 9 am on October 28 to 9 am on October 29.

The Thane interruption will affect supply through the municipal network and the STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company Pvt Ltd. Areas listed for the disruption include Ghodbunder Road, Lokmanya Nagar, Vartak Nagar, Saket, Rutu Park, Jail, Gandhi Nagar, Rustomjee, Siddhachal, Indira Nagar, Rupadevi, Shree Nagar, Samata Nagar, Siddheshwar, Eternity, Johnson, Mumbra and parts of Kalwa, among others.

The Thane civic body has advised residents to make arrangements in advance and use stored water carefully during the 24-hour shutdown. The measure follows a state government directive asking local authorities to manage available water resources carefully and prioritise drinking-water supplies amid concerns over changing weather conditions. The state government resolution calls for planned and judicious use of water stocks across Maharashtra until August 31, 2027.
