Mumbai Water Advisory Issued as Yewai Reservoir Enters Service

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has advised residents in Mumbai, parts of Thane and Bhiwandi to boil and filter drinking water for seven days as it commissions the repaired second compartment of the Yewai Master Balancing Reservoir at the Pise-Panjrapur Complex.

The civic body said the precaution was necessary because water quality could change during the commissioning process. The advisory applies to residents who receive BMC-supplied water in Mumbai city, the eastern suburbs and parts of the Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations.

The BMC has completed repairs to compartment no. 2 of the Yewai reservoir and is scheduled to commission it on Wednesday. The reservoir is part of the water-supply infrastructure at the Pise-Panjrapur Complex, which serves as a key point in the system that conveys treated water to large parts of the Mumbai region.

In the island city, the precautionary advisory covers the Naval Dockyard and BPT area in A Ward. It also applies across all of B, E, F-South and F-North wards. In the eastern suburbs, all of M-East and M-West wards are included, along with Mulund East and West in T Ward.

Residents in Bhandup, Nahur, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli East in S Ward have also been asked to follow the precaution. The advisory further covers Vikhroli and Ghatkopar East in N Ward, and Kurla East in L Ward.

The instruction is specifically to boil and filter drinking water for seven days. The BMC’s stated concern relates to possible changes in water quality while the reservoir compartment is brought back into service. The supplied report does not provide details of any confirmed contamination, illness or water-supply interruption linked to the commissioning.

The advisory illustrates how work on a single reservoir compartment can affect water-use practices across multiple municipal jurisdictions. Although the infrastructure is located at the Pise-Panjrapur Complex, the precaution extends beyond BMC’s administrative boundary to parts of Thane and Bhiwandi that receive water from the corporation’s network.

For residents in the listed areas, the BMC’s instruction is limited to drinking-water treatment during the seven-day period. The civic body has not, in the supplied information, announced any additional restrictions on other domestic uses of municipal water.

The next operational step is the commissioning of compartment no. 2 of the Yewai Master Balancing Reservoir. The precautionary period will run for seven days following the commissioning, according to the BMC advisory.
