Mumbai Tunnel Project Gets Green Light

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant milestone for the Orange Gate-Marine Drive tunnel project by securing a no objection certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT). This approval pertains to the construction of a crucial launch shaft on the MbPT land near P D’Mello Road. The allocated land encompasses a total area of 1.96 hectares, divided into 0.71 hectares of permanent area and 1.25 hectares of temporary area.

With this NOC in hand, MMRDA is set to transfer the designated land to the contractor, enabling the commencement of tunneling works. The launch shaft, a critical component in tunneling operations, will serve as the starting point for the tunnel boring machine (TBM). This vertical or near-vertical excavation will provide the necessary space for the assembly, testing, and deployment of the TBM. Additionally, it will function as a conduit for the removal of excavated material, facilitated by cranes or conveyor systems.

The proposed tunnel is poised to significantly enhance connectivity between the western and eastern parts of Mumbai, offering the shortest route for commuters. The ambitious Rs 7,765 crore project will cover a total distance of 9.2 kilometers, including 6.52 kilometers of twin tunnels. Each tunnel will be 11 meters wide, accommodating two lanes for traffic and an additional lane reserved for emergency purposes. Furthermore, cross passages will be incorporated between the two tunnels to address unforeseen circumstances.

The Orange Gate-Marine Drive tunnel project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the overall transportation infrastructure in Mumbai. This development is seen as a crucial step in the city’s urban planning and infrastructure enhancement efforts. The project’s timely execution will not only benefit daily commuters but also contribute to the city’s economic growth by facilitating smoother and more efficient transportation routes.

The approval from MbPT marks a significant advancement in the project’s timeline. With the launch shaft construction now poised to begin, the MMRDA and its contractors are gearing up to expedite the tunneling process. This progress underscores the collaborative efforts between various governmental bodies and private contractors to achieve infrastructural milestones.

The successful completion of this project will be a testament to Mumbai’s evolving urban landscape, reflecting the city’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure while addressing the growing demands of its population. As the tunneling work progresses, stakeholders and residents alike are hopeful for a seamless and timely execution of this transformative project.
