Mumbai Travelator Skywalk Boosts Public Transport Links

Mumbai is approaching a significant milestone in its public transport integration strategy, with the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project nearing completion. Designed to connect suburban rail, Metro Line 3 and the Monorail through an elevated pedestrian interchange equipped with travelators, the project is expected to shorten transfer times and strengthen seamless mobility across one of the city’s busiest transport corridors. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed nearly 90 per cent of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, which introduces what is expected to be India’s first travelator-equipped skywalk linking three major urban transit systems. The integrated interchange will provide direct pedestrian connectivity between Mahalaxmi suburban railway station, the nearby Metro Line 3 station and the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station, reducing dependence on road-based transfers.

Once operational, the elevated facility is expected to cut interchange time by nearly 20 minutes for thousands of daily commuters. At the centre of the project is a 283-metre-long and 11-metre-wide pedestrian skywalk designed to accommodate around 4,500 passengers every hour. Six travelators with a combined length of 176 metres, together with two passenger lifts, have been incorporated to improve accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, families and travellers carrying luggage. Transport planners view the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project as an important step towards creating an integrated public transport ecosystem rather than treating individual transport modes as standalone networks. By enabling smoother transfers between suburban rail, metro and monorail services, the interchange is expected to encourage greater use of mass transit, reduce dependence on private vehicles and support lower transport-related carbon emissions in one of India’s most densely populated metropolitan regions. The project has also demonstrated the engineering challenges associated with constructing major infrastructure within an already developed urban environment.

Before structural work could begin, engineers relocated a large stormwater drain while ensuring uninterrupted operation of adjacent water supply and sewerage pipelines. Construction activities were coordinated to minimise disruption to traffic movement and community events in the surrounding area, reflecting the growing importance of integrated planning in urban infrastructure delivery. Officials associated with the project have also indicated that construction was completed without the removal of mature trees, highlighting the increasing emphasis on balancing transport expansion with environmental considerations. Urban development experts note that preserving existing green assets while upgrading mobility infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as cities pursue climate-resilient growth strategies. Beyond improving commuter convenience, the project is expected to strengthen network efficiency across Mumbai’s expanding metro and rail systems by making multimodal travel faster, safer and more predictable. Such infrastructure also supports transit-oriented development by encouraging higher public transport usage around major interchange hubs.

As Mumbai continues investing in new metro corridors and regional connectivity projects, integrated passenger facilities are likely to become a defining feature of future transport planning. The successful delivery of the Mahalaxmi interchange could establish a new benchmark for multimodal mobility, demonstrating how pedestrian-first infrastructure can improve accessibility while advancing a more sustainable and connected urban transport network.
