The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting continued weather disturbances over the next few days.
Late Tuesday evening, gusty winds and moderate showers swept across Mumbai and its neighboring districts, including Thane and Palghar. The sudden change in weather led to disruptions in suburban train services and road traffic. According to the IMD, wind speeds reached up to 50 km/h in certain areas, causing tree collapses and affecting visibility. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34°C on Tuesday, while the minimum temperature was 29°C, which is over two degrees above the normal. The unexpected rainfall provided temporary relief from the heat but also highlighted the city’s vulnerability to sudden weather changes.
Experts attribute the unseasonal showers to a strong western disturbance system currently over West Rajasthan. This system is influencing weather conditions in the Konkan region, including Mumbai. The IMD has indicated that this weather pattern may lead to a drop in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees in the coming days. In response to the weather forecast, the IMD has placed Mumbai and several other districts in the Konkan region under a yellow alert until Thursday morning. Residents are advised to take precautions while moving out, as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected in isolated pockets.
The sudden weather changes have raised concerns about the city’s infrastructure and preparedness for such events. Urban planners and environmentalists emphasize the need for sustainable and resilient infrastructure to cope with the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. As Mumbai continues to experience unpredictable weather patterns, authorities and residents alike are urged to stay informed and prepared. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
