Mumbai Reservoir Levels Improve With Monsoon Rains

Strong monsoon rainfall has substantially improved Mumbai’s drinking water reserves, with Tansa becoming the third reservoir to overflow this season and the city’s combined water storage climbing to around 62% of total capacity. The development eases immediate concerns over water availability but civic authorities remain cautious, keeping existing supply restrictions in place as they monitor the remainder of the monsoon. Tansa Lake, located in neighbouring Thane district, overflowed on Wednesday morning following sustained rainfall across its catchment area. The reservoir, which contributes approximately 455 million litres of drinking water each day to Mumbai, joins Tulsi and Vihar lakes, both of which reached full capacity earlier this month after intense rainfall revived the city’s reservoir network.

The latest inflows have lifted Mumbai water storage to nearly 8.95 lakh million litres (ML), equivalent to about 62% of the combined live storage capacity across the seven reservoirs supplying the metropolitan region. Based on current consumption levels, the available reserves are estimated to meet the city’s drinking water demand for approximately 219 days, marking a significant improvement from the situation witnessed just a few weeks ago. The turnaround follows an uncertain start to the southwest monsoon. Delayed rainfall and prolonged dry weather during June had pushed reservoir levels to concerning lows, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to introduce a 10% reduction in water supply from mid-May as a precautionary measure. Heavy rainfall during early July has since reversed the declining trend, highlighting the dependence of Mumbai’s water security on seasonal precipitation across distant catchment areas. While storage has improved, reservoir levels remain uneven across the network. Modak Sagar is approaching full capacity at around 90%, while Bhatsa, one of Mumbai’s largest sources of potable water, stands at nearly 57%. Middle Vaitarna has crossed the halfway mark, whereas Upper Vaitarna continues to trail behind with storage below 40%, underscoring why civic officials are avoiding premature relaxation of conservation measures.

Water resource specialists argue that the improvement in Mumbai water storage should not diminish the need for long-term planning. Climate variability has increased the frequency of delayed monsoons, erratic rainfall patterns and extended dry spells, making reservoir management more complex. Investments in leak reduction, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling and demand-side conservation will be essential to strengthen resilience against future climatic uncertainty. Municipal authorities have indicated that water supply restrictions will continue until reservoir conditions stabilise further and a clearer assessment of seasonal rainfall emerges. Forecasts suggesting below-normal precipitation during parts of the remaining monsoon have reinforced a cautious approach to reservoir management.

As the monsoon progresses, continued inflows into the remaining reservoirs will determine whether Mumbai can comfortably rebuild its annual water reserves. Urban planners believe balancing immediate supply needs with long-term conservation will remain central to securing sustainable water availability for one of the world’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
