Mumbai Railways Install Red Safety Boxes to Prevent Trespassing

The Central Railway (CR) has installed red safety boxes at the ends of platforms across key railway stations in Mumbai. This measure aims to prevent trespassing and reduce the number of related accidents and fatalities. Implemented at the beginning of the year by the Mumbai division, the initiative has already shown promising results.

Previously, CR had attempted to deter trespassers by greasing the ends of platforms, but this approach received considerable criticism. The grease posed risks to maintenance workers and proved ineffective over time due to drying out under the sun and humidity. In contrast, the new red safety boxes have effectively curbed the dangerous practice of jumping off platforms.

A detailed study by CR revealed that there were 286 slopes at the ends of platforms on the suburban section, facilitating easy access for trespassers. These slopes have been largely demolished, with 90% removed, and replaced by the strategically placed safety boxes. Official statistics highlight the success of this initiative, with trespassing-related incidents and deaths dropping from 276 in the first quarter of 2023 to 195 in the same period in 2024.

CR Mumbai has been running a focused campaign targeting high-trespassing stations such as Kurla, Thane, Wadala, and Govandi. By cutting down slopes and installing the safety boxes, they have created a physical barrier that discourages jumping, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, senior citizens, and those carrying heavy luggage. An official explained, “The boxes now make such activities difficult as they are at the edge and dug deeper.”

The Federation of Suburban Passengers’ Association has praised the initiative. A representative stated, “Any attempt to save precious lives is always welcome on the crowded Mumbai suburban railway system. We keep on stressing this fact during our several meetings and representations.”

This initiative is part of CR’s broader strategy to improve passenger safety and reduce fatalities on one of the world’s busiest suburban railway networks. The red safety boxes have proven to be a simple yet effective solution, significantly improving safety for Mumbai’s daily commuters.
