Mumbai’s suburban rail network will operate under a revised schedule as Central Railway undertakes a planned maintenance block on key sections of the Main and Trans-Harbour corridors. While the temporary disruption is expected to affect thousands of commuters, the engineering works are intended to strengthen operational safety, improve network reliability and support the long-term resilience of one of the world’s busiest commuter railway systems. Central Railway’s Mumbai Division has scheduled a Central Railway Mega Block on the Main Line between Thane and Kalyan, along with the Trans-Harbour corridor between Thane and Vashi/Nerul, to facilitate essential track and infrastructure maintenance. The routine engineering exercise forms part of the railway’s preventive maintenance programme aimed at ensuring safe and uninterrupted suburban operations.
On the Main Line, maintenance work is being carried out on the Up and Down Fast Lines between Thane and Kalyan from 10.40 am to 3.40 pm. During this period, fast and semi-fast suburban services will be diverted to the slow corridor, with additional halts provided at Kalva, Mumbra and Diva stations. Railway officials expect diverted services to reach their destinations with an average delay of around 10 minutes. Several long-distance Mail and Express trains will also be rerouted through the fifth and sixth railway lines to minimise operational conflicts. The Central Railway Mega Block will also affect the Trans-Harbour Line, where train services between Thane and Vashi/Nerul will remain suspended from 11.10 am until 4.10 pm. A number of suburban services operating between Thane, Vashi, Nerul and Panvel during the maintenance window have been cancelled, requiring passengers to seek alternative travel arrangements or adjust journey schedules. No daytime maintenance block has been announced on the Western Railway suburban network, allowing services on that corridor to operate under the normal timetable.
