Mumbai Pune Transit Moves Towards Cleaner Buses

Mumbai and Pune are set to accelerate the transition towards low-emission public transport following the award of a contract for 650 electric buses under the Government of India’s PM E-Drive Phase II programme. The deployment marks another significant step in Maharashtra’s efforts to decarbonise urban mobility while strengthening bus-based public transport in two of the state’s largest metropolitan regions. The new Mumbai Electric Bus deployment will see 9-metre battery-powered buses introduced across the fleets of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) in Mumbai and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) in Pune. The buses, comprising both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned variants, are expected to operate on city routes with high passenger demand, replacing conventional diesel-powered vehicles over time.

The procurement has been undertaken through the PM E-Drive Phase II framework, which seeks to support large-scale electrification of public transport by enabling operators to deploy zero-emission buses through competitive procurement models. Urban mobility experts note that larger fleet deployments generate greater environmental benefits than isolated pilot projects by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving local air quality and lowering noise pollution across densely populated urban corridors. For Mumbai and Pune, where buses remain a critical component of daily commuting, the expanded Mumbai Electric Bus programme could also contribute to more reliable and comfortable passenger services. Electric buses typically offer quieter operations, smoother acceleration and lower maintenance requirements, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Transport planners argue that integrating electric buses with metro, suburban rail and other mass transit systems is essential for creating sustainable multimodal mobility networks capable of supporting growing urban populations.

Beyond environmental gains, the deployment is expected to provide operational insights into charging infrastructure, fleet scheduling, battery performance and energy management under demanding city conditions. These lessons could inform future procurement strategies as Indian cities continue expanding electric public transport networks under national clean mobility initiatives. The latest order also reflects the increasing maturity of India’s electric bus ecosystem, where manufacturers, operators and public agencies are collaborating to scale zero-emission transport. Industry analysts observe that sustained procurement through central government programmes can improve economies of scale, encourage domestic manufacturing and support the development of charging infrastructure required for long-term fleet electrification. However, experts caution that the success of electric bus programmes depends not only on vehicle procurement but also on supporting investments in charging facilities, grid capacity, maintenance systems and workforce training. Without these complementary measures, cities may struggle to realise the full environmental and operational benefits of electric mobility.

As Mumbai and Pune continue investing in sustainable urban transport, the expansion of electric bus services represents a broader shift towards cleaner, climate-resilient mobility systems. The long-term impact will ultimately depend on how effectively the new fleet is integrated into existing public transport operations while ensuring reliable services, reduced emissions and improved accessibility for millions of daily commuters.
