Mumbai is set to strengthen its public transport network with a first-of-its-kind travelator skywalk that will create a seamless pedestrian connection between Metro services, the Monorail and the suburban railway system. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to significantly improve passenger transfers, making multimodal travel faster, safer and more accessible while reinforcing the city’s long-term strategy of prioritising public transport over private vehicles. The project is designed to eliminate one of the biggest challenges facing Mumbai’s transport users—moving between different transit systems. Despite substantial investment in rail-based infrastructure over the past decade, commuters frequently encounter congested roads, lengthy walks and poorly connected station entrances when changing between transport modes. The new travelator skywalk seeks to bridge these gaps through a continuous, weather-protected pedestrian route equipped with automated moving walkways.
Transport planners view seamless interchange infrastructure as a critical component of sustainable urban mobility.
