Construction of Mumbai Metro Line 6 has crossed a significant engineering milestone with the successful completion of a critical railway crossing near Kanjurmarg, accelerating progress on one of the city’s most important east-west transit corridors. The achievement is expected to support faster execution of the remaining works while strengthening Mumbai’s long-term strategy of expanding sustainable public transport and reducing dependence on road-based travel. The recently completed structure carries the elevated metro corridor across active Central Railway tracks, one of the project’s most technically demanding components. Spanning 15.31 kilometres, Mumbai Metro Line 6 will connect Swami Samarth Nagar in the western suburbs with Vikhroli in the eastern corridor. The route has been designed to improve cross-city mobility by linking the Western Express Highway and Eastern Express Highway while providing interchange facilities with multiple operational and upcoming metro corridors. Transport planners believe these network integrations will significantly improve journey flexibility for commuters travelling across Mumbai’s expanding metropolitan transit system. Urban mobility experts note that east-west connectivity has long remained one of Mumbai’s most persistent transport challenges, with heavy dependence on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). The metro corridor is expected to divert a substantial share of commuter traffic from this congested arterial road, reducing travel delays, vehicle emissions and fuel consumption while encouraging a greater shift towards mass public transport. Alongside construction progress, project authorities have initiated monsoon preparedness measures across work zones.
Temporary barricades are being removed from completed sections wherever feasible to improve road movement, while drainage systems along the corridor are being cleaned to minimise the risk of waterlogging during the rainy season. These interventions are intended to reduce disruption for motorists and nearby communities while major infrastructure work continues. With the civil engineering phase approaching completion across much of the alignment, the focus is gradually shifting towards systems installation, including electrical infrastructure, signalling and operational testing. Construction of the integrated depot at Kanjurmarg remains a key priority, as it will support train maintenance, operational readiness and trial runs before passenger services commence. Infrastructure analysts consider Mumbai Metro Line 6 a strategically important investment that extends beyond transport efficiency.
