Mumbai’s Metro Line 3 Phase 2A, connecting Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, commenced operations on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transportation network.
On its opening day, the metro line recorded approximately 26,000 passengers, indicating a strong public response to the extended service. This is a notable increase from the 15,000 passengers recorded on May 3, when the service was limited to BKC.
The 9.77-kilometre extension introduces six new stations: Dharavi, Sitaladevi Mandir, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk. This expansion aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a faster, more efficient mode of transport for commuters in these areas. The metro now operates 244 daily trains on this route, with a frequency of every 6 minutes and 20 seconds, covering the entire stretch in approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
In addition to the core metro services, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has collaborated with Phoenix Palladium Mall in Lower Parel to offer a free shuttle service from Acharya Atre Chowk Metro Station to the mall. This initiative aims to enhance last-mile connectivity and encourage the use of public transport among residents and visitors.
Looking ahead, the final phase of Metro Line 3, connecting Worli to Colaba, is expected to commence operations in August. Upon completion, the entire 33.5-kilometre corridor will provide seamless connectivity across key commercial and residential hubs in Mumbai, further reducing travel times and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
The successful launch and positive public reception of Metro Line 3 Phase 2A underscore the growing demand for efficient and eco-friendly public transportation solutions in Mumbai. As the city continues to expand, such infrastructure developments are crucial in addressing traffic congestion and supporting sustainable urban growth.
