The immediate technical issue concerns the height of overhead electrification, or OHE, equipment used to power Metro trains. At the Airport Colony station, the structure itself remains within the height clearance approved by airport authorities. However, an adjoining ramp requires an additional 2.4 metres to accommodate OHE poles.
Other sections of the elevated alignment also require adjustments, with additional height requirements ranging from 0.025 metres to 2.244 metres. The final extent of any structural modification will depend on the technical assessment being prepared by the aviation authorities. The Mumbai Metro 7A project is being developed in an environment where rail infrastructure must operate alongside strict aviation safeguards. Height restrictions around airports are intended to protect aircraft operations, making early coordination between transport planners, designers and aviation regulators essential. A senior project official has indicated that the project’s general consultant was responsible for coordinating design and statutory requirements, including aviation-related restrictions. The additional OHE height requirement was not sufficiently incorporated during the relevant design stage, according to the project authority.
The matter has been under discussion with airport and civil aviation authorities since 2024. Multiple communications were subsequently made through 2025 as the project authority sought clarity on the applicable clearances and possible modifications. A final technical report is now awaited. For the Mumbai Metro 7A, the financial implications could extend beyond the immediate engineering work. Reconstructing completed or advanced viaduct sections would involve additional construction expenditure, while redesign and regulatory approvals could affect the delivery schedule. Such changes can also disrupt construction sequencing and create knock-on effects for station and systems installation. The episode highlights a broader challenge facing large infrastructure projects in dense metropolitan areas. Transport corridors increasingly interact with airports, utilities, existing roads, waterways and established neighbourhoods.
