Mumbai local train services were disrupted twice on Thursday after an emergency chain-pulling incident near Kalyan affected morning operations and a technical fault between Tilak Nagar and Chembur interrupted Harbour line traffic, inconveniencing commuters on two Central Railway routes.
The first incident took place at around 9.30am near Kalyan station when an unidentified person pulled the emergency chain in the S-9 sleeper coach of special train No. 09323, the Khadki-Indore Express. The train was travelling with services on the Central Railway’s main line.
Central Railway officials said railway staff reached the coach and restored the emergency chain. The train resumed its journey within five minutes, according to the officials. No person had been detained in connection with the incident at the time of the report.
The second disruption occurred on the Harbour line between Tilak Nagar and Chembur. A Panvel-bound local developed a technical fault that caused its pantograph to come down from the overhead wire, affecting the train’s connection with the electrification system.
The Harbour line disruption lasted from 10.25am to 10.32am, or approximately seven minutes. Railway officials said the fault affected three local train services operating on the route during that period.
The two incidents occurred on separate sections of Mumbai’s suburban railway network but affected services during the morning operating period. The Central Railway’s main and Harbour lines serve large commuter flows across Mumbai and adjoining areas, making even short interruptions capable of affecting multiple train movements.
The incidents also involved two different causes of disruption. The Kalyan incident was linked to the use of the emergency chain on a special train, while the Harbour line interruption resulted from a technical problem involving the pantograph and overhead wire. In both cases, railway staff intervened to restore operations.
No further details were provided in the report about the identity of the person who pulled the emergency chain, the reason for the action, or whether any disciplinary or legal proceedings would follow. The report also did not specify whether the three Harbour line trains experienced cancellations, delays beyond the seven-minute disruption window, or changes to their scheduled services.
Central Railway officials said the Khadki-Indore Express resumed its journey after the chain was restored. The Harbour line service was affected between Tilak Nagar and Chembur until 10.32am, after which the reported disruption ended.
