Mumbai Infrastructure Projects Impact Thousands Of Trees
Mumbai’s push to accelerate large-scale infrastructure and redevelopment projects has entered another environmentally sensitive phase, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Tree Authority approving a series of proposals that will affect more than 2,800 trees across the city. The decisions, covering projects ranging from housing redevelopment to transport infrastructure, have renewed debate over how India’s financial capital balances urban expansion with protection of its diminishing green cover. The approvals span 11 public and private development proposals involving tree felling, transplantation and removal. The largest share relates to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, where a total of 1,693 trees are expected to be impacted. Of these, 871 have been approved for removal while 822 are proposed for transplantation as redevelopment progresses across one of Asia’s largest informal settlements.
The Mumbai Tree Authority also granted permissions linked to several other projects, including road connectivity works, slum rehabilitation schemes, private redevelopment, institutional facilities and underground transport infrastructure. Together, these proposals reflect the growing pressure on urban land as Mumbai continues to expand transport networks, regenerate ageing neighbourhoods and improve civic infrastructure. However, the latest approvals have also intensified scrutiny of the city’s environmental governance framework. Members of the authority and urban ecology experts have raised concerns over whether tree transplantation commitments made during previous infrastructure projects have been independently monitored and publicly reported. Environmental planners argue that while transplantation is increasingly presented as a mitigation strategy, its effectiveness depends on species selection, site conditions, long-term maintenance and transparent disclosure of survival rates.
The debate extends beyond the number of trees removed. Ecologists note that mature trees provide significantly greater environmental value than newly planted saplings by storing carbon, reducing surface temperatures, filtering air pollutants and managing stormwater runoff. In a city increasingly vulnerable to heat stress and intense monsoon rainfall, preserving established urban forests is viewed as a critical component of climate resilience rather than solely an environmental consideration. The Mumbai Tree Authority approvals also highlight the need for stronger integration between urban planning and ecological assessments. As redevelopment projects gather pace, experts recommend that environmental planning should move beyond compensatory plantation targets and incorporate measurable indicators such as canopy restoration, biodiversity enhancement and long-term monitoring of transplanted trees. Publicly accessible data on plantation outcomes could improve accountability while strengthening confidence in environmental decision-making.
Mumbai continues to pursue major investments in housing, transport and civic infrastructure to support economic growth and improve mobility. Yet planners increasingly emphasise that sustainable urban development depends not only on delivering projects on schedule but also on safeguarding natural assets that underpin public health and climate resilience. Future project approvals are therefore likely to face growing expectations for transparent ecological reporting, independent monitoring and measurable restoration outcomes alongside engineering and financial performance.
