India’s first high-speed railway linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad is moving into a decisive phase, with the full corridor now targeted for completion by the end of 2029 as construction accelerates across multiple sections. The latest progress signals a significant step in reshaping intercity mobility, reducing travel times and strengthening economic integration between two of the country’s most important commercial centres. During a review of railway infrastructure projects in Ahmedabad, senior officials overseeing the national rail network indicated that work on the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor has gathered pace, particularly in Gujarat, where approximately 80 per cent of civil construction has been completed. The project is being executed in stages, with the Surat–Bilimora section expected to become the first operational stretch before the entire alignment is commissioned.
The phased approach reflects the engineering complexity of India’s first high-speed rail system, which spans varied terrain, urban corridors, river crossings and underground sections. While Gujarat has witnessed faster construction progress, work in Maharashtra has advanced steadily over the past year, including tunnelling, bridge construction and station development that are critical to completing the western end of the corridor. Transport economists view the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train project as more than a transport upgrade. High-speed rail has the potential to reshape regional economic geography by improving business connectivity, expanding labour markets and encouraging investment along emerging growth corridors. Faster and more reliable intercity travel can also reduce dependence on short-haul aviation and road transport, supporting lower transport emissions when powered through increasingly cleaner electricity sources. Alongside the high-speed rail review, railway authorities assessed the ongoing redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station and planning for the modernisation of Asarva Railway Station.
Both projects are intended to improve passenger circulation, multimodal integration and station infrastructure while supporting broader urban regeneration around major transport nodes. Plans to improve road access around Sabarmati and Shahpur were also reviewed to strengthen first- and last-mile connectivity for commuters. Infrastructure specialists note that station redevelopment is becoming an essential component of railway modernisation, as transport hubs increasingly function as integrated urban gateways rather than standalone rail terminals. Efficient access, pedestrian infrastructure, public transport integration and sustainable urban design are expected to determine the long-term success of these investments. Officials also reviewed progress on local infrastructure works, including an underpass project expected to improve traffic movement before the festive season. Such complementary projects are designed to minimise congestion around railway precincts while enhancing accessibility for surrounding neighbourhoods.
As construction advances across both Gujarat and Maharashtra, the coming years will determine whether the country’s first high-speed rail line can meet its revised delivery timeline.
