Mumbai has unveiled the ‘Mumbai 1’ transport card, a unified ticketing solution designed to provide seamless access across the city’s diverse public transportation network.
The launch of this integrated card, announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, coincides with the introduction of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) trains to the suburban railway network, marking a substantial upgrade to the city’s transportation infrastructure. The ‘Mumbai 1’ card, a prepaid contactless card co-branded by the State Bank and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), promises to revolutionise the way Mumbaikars navigate the city. Functioning on a pay-as-you-go system, the card will initially allow passengers to seamlessly access suburban rail services and book tickets for the rapidly expanding Mumbai Metro, the monorail, and the extensive network of public buses operated by BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport). This integration will eliminate the need for commuters to purchase multiple tickets for different modes of transport, a daily inconvenience faced by millions.
Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that the state government is committed to a swift rollout of the ‘Mumbai 1’ card across the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), indicating a phased implementation to ensure smooth adoption and integration with all relevant transport operators. The underlying technology will leverage a software application already in use on Metro Rail Lines 1, 2A, and 7, suggesting a foundation of existing digital infrastructure that will facilitate the broader integration of additional public transport modes in the near future. The ‘Mumbai 1’ card boasts several features designed to enhance the commuting experience. Its tap-to-go functionality will enable quick and contactless payments at entry and exit points across different stations and transport modes, significantly reducing transaction times and eliminating the need to fumble for change or stand in long queues. The card’s stored value system allows for convenient and hassle-free travel, with the ability to book a single ticket for a journey spanning multiple modes of transport from origin to destination. Furthermore, the card incorporates chip protection, enhancing security and safeguarding users’ funds.
While the convenience and integration offered by the ‘Mumbai 1’ card are significant, provisions have also been made for practical considerations such as loss or damage. A replacement fee of ₹100 will be applicable in such instances. The validity of each card will be clearly printed at the time of issuance, ensuring transparency for users. The introduction of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains to the Mumbai suburban railway network represents another substantial upgrade aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and potentially encouraging a shift towards more sustainable public transport options.
