Mumbai’s transition towards cleaner mobility is gathering pace as the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure begins to reshape how residents and businesses approach urban transportation. The latest growth in the EV charging network across Maharashtra reflects a broader shift in India’s metropolitan regions, where reducing transport emissions is increasingly becoming central to climate resilience and sustainable urban planning. Recent industry data indicates that more than 5,500 public charging points are now operational across over 700 cities and towns nationwide. Maharashtra has emerged as one of the leading contributors to this growth, accounting for more than 2,400 charging facilities. Of these, over 1,800 charging points are concentrated within Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, two of the country’s most densely populated urban centres.
The expansion of the EV charging network comes at a critical time for Indian cities confronting worsening air pollution, rising fuel costs and mounting pressure to decarbonise transport systems. Although the environmental impact of electric mobility ultimately depends on the energy mix powering the grid, experts suggest that increasing renewable energy integration could significantly amplify these benefits over time. For Mumbai and the wider metropolitan region, the development of charging infrastructure carries economic implications as well. Expanding charging networks creates opportunities across installation, maintenance, software management and energy services, supporting emerging green jobs and strengthening the clean technology value chain. Urban planners also note that charging infrastructure must evolve alongside broader transport priorities.
