Mumbai’s civic administration has begun large-scale plantation work along the city’s Coastal Road corridor as authorities move to convert reclaimed shoreline land into landscaped public spaces, urban forests and pedestrian zones ahead of the monsoon season. The initiative involves the plantation of nearly 15,000 trees in the first phase across sections of the southern coastal corridor, including stretches near Worli and Breach Candy. The broader landscape plan linked to the Coastal Road project aims to eventually introduce tens of thousands of trees and shrubs across reclaimed land created during the construction of the 10.6-kilometre transport corridor.
Urban planners say the project represents one of Mumbai’s most ambitious attempts to integrate transport infrastructure with public open spaces. However, it also arrives amid intensifying environmental scrutiny over the ecological consequences of large-scale coastal development and mangrove loss elsewhere in the metropolitan region. The reclaimed land generated through the Coastal Road project is expected to accommodate gardens, walking tracks, cycling paths, waterfront promenades and dense green pockets intended to improve public access to the coastline. Civic officials involved in the landscaping programme indicated that soil testing and coastal adaptation studies are being conducted to determine which plant species can survive saline conditions and sea-facing weather patterns. Two dedicated nurseries are being developed to support the plantation programme and assess the resilience of selected tree species before wider transplantation across the corridor. Environmental experts note that vegetation survival on reclaimed coastal terrain remains technically challenging due to high salinity, unstable soil composition and exposure to sea winds. The Coastal Road greenery programme is also being positioned as part of Mumbai’s wider climate adaptation strategy. Urban forestry specialists argue that expanding green cover along high-density transport corridors can help reduce localised heat stress, improve air quality and create more accessible recreational spaces in a city with limited per capita open land.
At the same time, the project continues to trigger debate over the environmental trade-offs associated with coastal infrastructure expansion. Citizen groups and environmental advocates have raised concerns that while landscaping and urban greening may improve liveability in some areas, large-scale reclamation and associated infrastructure development can disrupt marine ecosystems and weaken natural coastal buffers. Those concerns resurfaced recently during a public mobilisation in Bandra West opposing the proposed removal of mangrove cover linked to another planned coastal road corridor in the metropolitan region. Participants at the gathering highlighted the role mangroves play in protecting shorelines from flooding, supporting biodiversity and sustaining traditional fishing communities vulnerable to climate-related disruptions. Urban policy analysts say Mumbai’s future infrastructure strategy will increasingly be judged not only by mobility improvements but also by how effectively projects preserve ecological systems while expanding public amenities. As climate risks intensify across coastal cities, balancing transport growth with environmental resilience is becoming central to long-term urban planning.
The landscaping work along the Coastal Road corridor is expected to continue in phases over the next two years. The larger test for the city, however, will be whether new public infrastructure can coexist with stronger ecological safeguards and more climate-sensitive development practices across Mumbai’s coastline.
