Attapur Power Upgrade Brings Hyderabad’s First Unmanned Substation Online

Hyderabad’s power distribution network has received a major local upgrade with the commissioning of a 33/11 kV substation at STP Attapur, a facility that Deccan Chronicle reported as the city’s first unmanned substation. Built at a cost of Rs.14.38 crore, the installation has been technically charged and brought into service in the Mir Alam Sub-Division of the Charminar Division under the Hyderabad South Circle of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL).

The substation will supply electricity through eight 11 kV feeders. According to the report, the new distribution capacity is expected to improve the quality and reliability of power supply for consumers in surrounding parts of south Hyderabad. By adding a local 33/11 kV transformation point, the project strengthens the distribution network serving a mix of residential neighbourhoods, a water and sewage utility installation, colonies and commercial activity.

The areas identified as beneficiaries include Attapur Village, Tejaswi Nagar, Ratan Nagar, Attapur Reddy Basti, Panduranga Nagar, Rambagh, Weaker Section Colony, Vasudev Reddy Nagar, Khajanagar and Bharath Nagar. The network will also serve the HMWSSB STP Attapur HT Service Plant, commercial establishments along PVNR Flyover Main Road, and neighbourhoods including Hyderguda, Laxmi Nagar, Kantha Reddy Nagar, New Friends Colony, CBIT Colony and NM Guda.

The distribution footprint extends to locations around PVNR Flyover Pillar No. 143, indicating that the project is intended to support electricity demand across both established residential areas and activity concentrated along a major urban corridor. The list also includes smaller colonies and weaker-section housing areas, underlining the broad service area of the substation rather than a project limited to a single development or institutional consumer.

TGSPDCL’s decision to operate the facility as an unmanned substation represents a shift in how a local electricity asset is managed. The report did not provide details on the monitoring, control or maintenance systems being used at the site, but the facility’s commissioning adds new distribution infrastructure to an area where reliable power supply is important for households, businesses and public utility operations.

The project also has an operational connection to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s sewage treatment plant at Attapur, which is listed among the installations expected to benefit. Reliable electricity for such facilities is important to the functioning of urban water and wastewater services, although the report did not specify the plant’s present supply arrangements or the measurable improvement expected after the substation became operational.

TGSPDCL said it continues to focus on modernising the power distribution network and providing quality, reliable and efficient electricity services to consumers. The commissioning of the Attapur substation is the latest reported step in that effort, with the eight feeders now forming the new local supply arrangement for the listed areas.
