Mumbai Coastal Road Now Open 16 Hours Daily, Including Weekends

Mumbai’s iconic Coastal Road has announced extended operational hours, significantly improving accessibility and connectivity for motorists. Effective immediately, the south-bound carriageway, stretching from the entry point at Rajani Patel Chowk (Lotus junction) to the exit at Marine Drive, will be open from 7 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.

This notable expansion from the previous 8 am to 8 pm schedule, which excluded weekends, marks a significant enhancement in travel convenience for commuters. Furthermore, entry and exit points at Amarson Garden junction will now operate within the extended timeframe, offering motorists extended access to this vital transportation artery. However, entry from Bindu Madhav Thackeray junction in Worli will maintain its operational hours from 8 am to 5 pm, ensuring a seamless flow of traffic management across different segments of the Coastal Road. This strategic adjustment in operational hours comes in response to requests from the project contractor, citing advanced mechanical installations and the need for real-time testing to ensure the adequacy of various systems, particularly within the north-bound tunnel. Additionally, stringent speed limits have been imposed to ensure safety, with the straight road capped at 80 km/h, the tunnel at 60 km/h, and turning points at 40 km/h.

However, while facilitating smoother traffic flow, authorities remain vigilant against unauthorised stops and photography along the Coastal Road. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Traffic) Pradnya Jedge emphasises strict enforcement, underlining the importance of compliance to maintain safety and efficiency. In tandem with the operational enhancements, attention is being directed towards addressing mobile connectivity issues within the south-bound coastal road tunnel, crucial for emergency services. Antenna installation efforts are underway, with OSR Teleservices Pvt Ltd slated to install antennas pending approval, signifying proactive measures to overcome operational challenges. As the Mumbai Coastal Road continues its journey towards full operationalisation by June, these developments underscore a concerted effort to optimise infrastructure and enhance commuter experiences in India’s financial capital.
