Mumbai Bullet Train Project Advances Underground Network

Mumbai’s high-speed rail programme has entered a significant new phase with the launch of underground excavation for a crucial tunnel connecting Vikhroli to the future Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station. The development marks an important engineering milestone for the Mumbai Bullet Train Project, reflecting continued progress on one of India’s largest transport infrastructure investments despite challenging monsoon conditions across the metropolitan region. Construction teams have deployed the country’s largest railway tunnel boring machine (TBM) to excavate a six-kilometre underground section that will accommodate both operational tracks within a single tunnel. The machine commenced operations from a deep launch shaft in Vikhroli and will advance towards the underground BKC terminal, forming part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.

The tunnelling operation contributes to a broader 21-kilometre underground alignment beneath Mumbai, one of the most technically demanding components of the entire project. While a section of the underground route has already been completed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, the remaining stretches are being excavated using large-diameter tunnel boring machines capable of operating through complex geological conditions with minimal disturbance to the dense urban environment above. The latest progress in the Mumbai Bullet Train Project comes even as heavy monsoon rainfall affected public events across the city. Although a planned inauguration ceremony was deferred due to severe weather warnings, tunnelling activities proceeded as scheduled, highlighting the project’s emphasis on maintaining construction momentum while adhering to operational safety protocols. Urban infrastructure experts regard underground tunnelling as a critical strategy for delivering major transport projects in highly developed cities where land availability is limited and surface disruption must be minimised.

By routing high-speed rail infrastructure beneath existing neighbourhoods, roads and commercial districts, planners aim to preserve urban functionality while expanding regional transport capacity. The deployment of a large Mixshield tunnel boring machine also reflects the growing adoption of advanced engineering technologies in India’s infrastructure sector. Such equipment is specifically designed to handle variable soil conditions and groundwater pressures, improving construction efficiency while reducing environmental impacts such as vibration, settlement and surface excavation compared with conventional methods. Beyond its engineering significance, the Mumbai Bullet Train Project is expected to strengthen long-term economic connectivity between Maharashtra and Gujarat. Improved intercity mobility has the potential to enhance business travel, support investment corridors and encourage more balanced regional development by reducing travel times between major commercial centres. Urban economists note that high-capacity public transport infrastructure can also contribute to lower transport emissions by encouraging modal shifts away from road and short-haul air travel.

As construction advances through one of the country’s most complex urban environments, continued attention will remain focused on engineering quality, environmental safeguards and integration with existing transport networks. Successful completion of the underground corridor will represent a major step towards delivering high-speed rail infrastructure that supports sustainable mobility, strengthens economic competitiveness and accommodates future urban growth with reduced dependence on carbon-intensive transport modes.
