Vasai | September 10, 2026 — Traffic on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway was severely disrupted on Thursday morning after long vehicle queues formed on the Gujarat-bound carriageway between Naigaon Bapane Phata and Sassoonavghar in Vasai-Virar, according to a report by Loksatta – Vasai-Virar.
The congestion affected an approximately five-kilometre stretch and caused significant delays for commuters travelling towards Vasai-Virar. Office workers, labourers and school students were among those caught in the morning traffic, the report said.
The affected section runs through the eastern side of Vasai-Virar city. While traffic congestion is often reported on the Mumbai-Thane-bound carriageway, Thursday’s disruption affected the route towards Vasai-Virar, creating difficulties for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
The report attributed the congestion to potholes at several points, inadequate traffic planning and illegal parking along the highway. A particularly large pothole beneath a railway bridge reportedly slowed vehicles significantly, leading to the formation of long queues and bringing traffic movement to a near standstill in parts of the stretch.
The disruption also raised the possibility of a second traffic blockage after some motorists attempted to drive against the direction of traffic on the Mumbai-Thane-bound carriageway. Such manoeuvres threatened to create congestion on both sides of the highway, according to the report.
Traffic police were working to remove obstructions from the road and restore normal movement. The immediate response focused on clearing the affected section and managing vehicles on the highway as queues continued to disrupt the morning commute.
Regular users and local residents have called for urgent repairs to the potholes and the introduction of more disciplined traffic management on the corridor. The report said commuters were also expressing anger over the time lost because of the disruption and the continuing traffic problems on the highway.
