Ahmedabad: India’s first high-speed rail service is expected to begin operations on the Surat–Bilimora section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor in 2027, marking the first operational phase of a project that aims to transform inter-city mobility between two of the country’s largest economic regions. The phased rollout is intended to bring passenger services online while construction continues across the remaining sections of the corridor.
According to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the initial commercial service will commence on the Surat–Bilimora stretch before the network is progressively expanded towards Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The strategy allows authorities to begin operations on completed infrastructure while final engineering, systems integration and testing continue elsewhere along the route. The Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor extends approximately 508 kilometres, connecting Gujarat and Maharashtra through dedicated high-speed rail infrastructure. Once fully operational, the project is expected to reduce travel times significantly while improving connectivity between major industrial, commercial and financial centres. Officials have indicated that construction has crossed a major milestone, with around 80 per cent of the overall project completed. Civil works have advanced rapidly in Gujarat, including viaduct construction, bridge crossings and station development, while track laying, electrification, signalling and operational testing will form the next critical stages before passenger services begin.
The phased commissioning model is widely used in large transport infrastructure projects to validate safety systems, operational procedures and passenger services before a network becomes fully functional. Transport planners say this approach can reduce implementation risks while enabling early economic and mobility benefits. Beyond faster travel, the project is expected to strengthen regional economic integration by improving access between manufacturing hubs, logistics centres and business districts. High-speed rail is also viewed as a lower-emission alternative to short-haul flights and long-distance road travel when supported by efficient public transport connections and low-carbon electricity.
A key component of the project is the Sabarmati Multimodal Transport Hub in Ahmedabad, where the high-speed rail system will integrate with conventional railway services, metro connectivity and other modes of urban transport. Urban mobility experts consider such multimodal integration essential to maximising passenger convenience and encouraging greater use of public transport. The corridor also represents a significant technological advancement for India’s infrastructure sector, introducing modern engineering practices, advanced rail systems and specialised construction techniques that could shape future high-speed rail projects across the country. As the project moves towards its operational phase, attention will increasingly focus on safety certification, trial operations and passenger readiness. The launch of the Surat–Bilimora section is expected to serve as an important milestone, demonstrating the viability of high-speed rail while laying the foundation for a more connected, sustainable and efficient inter-city transport network.
