Mumbai: A City on the Move by 2025

Mumbai, a bustling metropolis often marred by chronic congestion and strained public transport, is set to undergo a transformative infrastructural overhaul in the coming months. Key projects are being implemented to enhance connectivity and streamline transportation, addressing long-standing issues faced by residents.

Leading this ambitious initiative, the Metro 3 underground line aims to significantly ease the burden on the city’s overcrowded roads and suburban railways. Once operational, this line will connect vital hubs, including the international and domestic airports, and is projected to reduce travel time for thousands of commuters daily. The first phase, set to launch by October 2024, will encompass ten strategically located stations, serving as a critical transit option for the city’s increasingly mobile population. In addition to the Metro, the New Vashi Creek Bridge is on track for completion by September 2024. This new six-lane bridge will be constructed alongside the existing one, enhancing capacity to a remarkable twelve lanes. This upgrade will effectively alleviate traffic congestion on the Sion-Panvel Highway and facilitate smoother transit between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, addressing ongoing commuter concerns. Another significant development, the Samruddhi Mahamarg, or Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, promises to cut travel time between these two economic hubs to a mere eight hours by October 2024. This project serves not only as a testament to infrastructure growth but also as a catalyst for stimulating economic activities along the route. The Coastal Road project, expected to be completed by December 2024, aims to transform the landscape of urban travel. This ambitious endeavour will provide seamless, signal-free access between Marine Drive and the T2 terminal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, thereby reducing travel times and improving air quality along the coastal route.

As we look towards 2025, additional projects such as the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the missing link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are set to come to fruition, heralding a new era for Mumbai’s transport ecosystem. The new airport, designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, is expected to relieve pressure on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
