The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has operationalised a 24×7 Safety & Response Co-ordination Centre to receive, track and escalate complaints related to infrastructure projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Residents and road users can call the toll-free helpline 1800-22-8801 to report project-related emergencies, potential safety hazards and grievances, including inadequate barricading, traffic-management problems near construction sites, road damage, dust and other issues arising from ongoing works.
The centre has been introduced as MMRDA executes multiple Metro, road, bridge, tunnel and flyover projects across the region. These works involve several agencies, contractors and consultants, creating the need for a central system to coordinate complaints and monitor responses across project sites.
Under the mechanism, each complaint received by the centre will be registered and assessed based on its nature and urgency. It will then be routed to the concerned project or engineering team for verification and action. Urgent safety-related complaints will be escalated for immediate intervention.
The centre will also track complaints after they are forwarded, rather than simply passing them on to individual project teams. MMRDA has defined the process as “Report → Assess → Verify → Respond → Monitor → Close”, with issues to be followed until corrective action is completed.
The authority will conduct daily reviews of complaints, action taken and pending issues. A dedicated dashboard will provide senior management with a consolidated view of complaints across projects, including their nature, status and recurrence. It will also track trends by project, contractor and general consultant.
According to MMRDA, the system is intended to identify recurring safety concerns and delays in response, helping the authority fix accountability and introduce corrective and preventive measures. Lessons from one project can also be used to strengthen safety arrangements at other sites.
Contractors, consultants, engineers and project teams will continue to remain responsible for complying with prescribed safety standards and taking action at their respective sites. The Safety & Response Co-ordination Centre will provide an authority-wide layer of coordination, monitoring and oversight.
Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said infrastructure works were being undertaken across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region “at an unprecedented scale” and that response systems needed to be equally strong and coordinated. He said the centre would create a clear chain from reporting and verification to action and closure.
“The daily review and central dashboard will also give us a clear view across projects, helping identify recurring concerns, ensure accountability and intervene wherever required,” Mukherjee said.
MMRDA said the centre would operate on the principle of “Verify. Respond. Resolve.” The helpline is now available for complaints and emergencies connected with its infrastructure projects.
