Mizoram Urges Swift Highway Repairs Pre-Monsoon

As the monsoon season approaches, Mizoram’s deteriorating road infrastructure has prompted urgent appeals from state officials to the central government.

The state’s primary highways, particularly National Highway 306 (NH-306), which connects Aizawl to Silchar in Assam, are in dire need of repairs to prevent isolation and ensure the safety of commuters. In a recent meeting with the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Mizoram’s sole Lok Sabha representative emphasized the critical condition of NH-306. The highway, plagued by cracks, potholes, and landslide-prone sections, poses significant risks during heavy rainfall. The official urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to expedite repair and maintenance work, highlighting that delays could severely impact the state’s economy and accessibility.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by Mizoram’s geographical challenges. The state’s hilly terrain makes it susceptible to landslides and road blockages during the monsoon, and with limited air and rail connectivity, road transport remains the lifeline for the movement of goods and people. The official’s appeal also included a request for the immediate release of central funds to facilitate the repair work, noting that the state government has already submitted proposals and estimates to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Local communities and transporters have echoed these concerns. The poor condition of roads has disrupted daily life and commercial activities, with truck drivers facing increased risks due to unpredictable road conditions. The delay in maintenance threatens agricultural supply chains, which rely on timely transportation to markets within and outside the state.

The official stressed the importance of pre-monsoon preparedness, pointing out that lack of action now could lead to more extensive reconstruction work post-monsoon. The appeal is part of a broader concern regarding infrastructure in Northeast India, where poor road connectivity continues to hinder development and integration with the rest of the country. In response, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has assured that it is addressing the issue. Officials have indicated that tenders for some repair works have already been floated and that the Centre remains committed to improving road infrastructure in Mizoram and other northeastern states. However, the effectiveness of these assurances will depend on the promptness of the actions taken.

As the monsoon season nears, the residents of Mizoram remain hopeful that the government will act swiftly to address the pressing infrastructure challenges. Ensuring better highway development in Mizoram is not only crucial for the state’s economy but also for enhancing regional connectivity, safety, and resilience in the face of climate challenges.
