The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is embarking on a unique initiative to repurpose glass waste by creating a Glow Garden in south Delhi. This project falls under the waste-to-art theme, which MCD has previously employed by utilising old vehicles, electricity poles, broken swings and benches to craft sculptures. The proposed Glow Garden aims to showcase the artistic potential of glass waste, with a detailed project report currently in the works to outline the various forms, shapes and sizes in which glass waste can be transformed into sculptures.
In addition to the glass waste, MCD has been collecting discarded vehicle parts, pipes, angle iron, and seized rickshaws, among other items, which will contribute to the creation of the sculptures. Once illuminated with colourful lights, the glass sculptures are expected to exude elegance and beauty. South Delhi currently lacks a park with this unique theme, making the Glow Garden a novel addition to the city’s attractions.
In addition to the Glow Garden, MCD is also developing a Festival Park near LSR College using construction and demolition waste. This park will serve as a hub for celebrating festivals. The designated areas within the park will feature replicas showcasing scenes from different religions and cultures, encompassing festivals such as Diwali, Eid, Holi and Christmas. Furthermore, regional festivals from the South and the North-East will be prominently incorporated.
MCD’s previous endeavours in creating concept parks have garnered success, as exemplified by the Waste to Wonder Park in Sarai Kale Khan and the Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh. Encouraged by this positive response, the municipal corporation has committed to establishing two new parks made from iron scraps: Bollywood Park and Shaheedi Park
