The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has continued demolition and enforcement action against dangerous buildings, unauthorised construction and building-norm violations across all 12 zones of the capital, days after the collapse of a paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan killed seven people and injured at least five.
The civic body carried out action on Thursday in areas including Laxmi Nagar, Jagatpuri and Pandav Nagar. Visuals from these locations showed MCD teams undertaking demolition and enforcement operations against structures identified as violating building regulations.
Over the past two to three days, teams have also acted in Vishwas Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Karam Pura, Karol Bagh, Ramesh Nagar, Mansarovar Garden, Chandni Chowk and Nehru Vihar. The enforcement drive is expected to continue in these areas, according to the report.
The MCD has also resumed controlled demolition of the building adjoining the structure that collapsed in Satya Niketan on September 6. Officials said the adjoining structure was being brought down in a calibrated manner. The action follows the deadly collapse at a paying guest accommodation, which prompted the civic body to intensify inspections and enforcement against unsafe and unauthorised structures.
As part of a safety assessment exercise launched after the incident, MCD teams surveyed 1,252 paying guest buildings between September 7 and September 9. The exercise focused on identifying buildings that could pose safety risks or were operating in violation of applicable construction and property-use norms.
The civic action covers more than structural safety alone. The wider crackdown includes unauthorised construction, illegal misuse of properties and violations of building norms across Delhi. These issues affect the safety and use of residential and commercial premises, particularly in neighbourhoods where buildings may be altered or occupied without full compliance with civic requirements.
Official records cited in the report show that the MCD carried out 1,053 demolition actions between June 1 and September 9. During the same period, the civic body sealed 491 properties, issued 2,316 show-cause notices and served 757 demolition notices across the city.
The figures indicate the scale of the enforcement process already under way before and after the Satya Niketan collapse. The latest operations, however, represent an intensified phase of action following the incident and the subsequent assessment of paying guest buildings. The MCD’s citywide drive is continuing across its 12 zones, with further enforcement expected in the areas identified by the civic body.
