Margao’s Traffic Woes to Ease Comba Flyover Project Gains Approval

Margao MLA Digambar Kamat recently met with Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari in Delhi, pressing for accelerated approval of the proposed Road Overbridge (ROB) at Comba. The project, part of the Union ministry’s Setu Bandhan Scheme, aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Margao by facilitating smoother connectivity and reducing travel times.

Designed as a four-legged ROB, the Comba project will cater to traffic flow from Margao, providing direct access towards Khareband and the Damodar College educational complex. Currently, the area faces frequent closures of level crossing gates and challenges posed by an inundated subway during the monsoon season, necessitating a more efficient traffic management solution.

“The Comba ROB, alongside the completion of the ring road’s missing link, promises substantial relief from Margao’s traffic woes,” affirmed sources from the state Public Works Department (PWD). The flyover is anticipated to streamline traffic movements significantly, eliminating sharp turns and seasonal flooding issues associated with the existing subway. PWD has already initiated soil investigation work for the proposed flyover, marking a crucial step towards bridging the missing link in Margao’s ring road network. This additional flyover project, spanning approximately one kilometre from Fomento’s office to Victor Hospital, has received recent approval from the Centre, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure.

Both projects, the Comba ROB and the ring road flyover, are projected to be completed within a timeline of two to three years. With an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore for the ring road flyover alone, these developments signify a significant investment in Margao’s urban infrastructure. As Margao prepares for these transformative infrastructure upgrades, stakeholders anticipate smoother traffic flows, improved connectivity, and enhanced safety for commuters. The approval of these projects underscores a proactive approach by authorities in addressing long-standing traffic challenges and fostering sustainable urban development in the region.
