The Indian Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who fell into the Arabian Sea while pulling in a fishing net and later evacuated him for medical treatment during a midnight operation off the Mangaluru coast, according to a statement reported by Prajavani – Dakshina Kannada.
The fisherman, identified as Komara Ramu, was aboard the fishing boat Shiv Sagar when he fell into the water about 54 nautical miles, or approximately 100 kilometres, from Mangaluru. Other fishermen on the boat pulled him out of the sea, but he was unconscious and required urgent medical attention.
The crew sent an emergency message to the Indian Coast Guard after the incident. The Coast Guard responded by dispatching the vessel ICGS C-448 to the location, the report said.
Despite the darkness and difficult conditions during the night operation, the Coast Guard vessel located the Shiv Sagar fishing boat. Coast Guard personnel provided first aid to Ramu before bringing him to a jetty at New Mangalore Port.
He was subsequently admitted to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment, the Coast Guard said in its statement. The operation involved coordination between the fishing crew, the Coast Guard vessel and port-side medical access, allowing the injured fisherman to be moved from a vessel operating offshore to treatment on land.
The incident highlights the role of maritime emergency response services in supporting fishing activity along the Karnataka coast, where crews operate far from shore and may require evacuation when injuries or medical emergencies occur at sea. The Coast Guard’s statement did not provide further details about the fisherman’s medical condition or the hospital where he was admitted.
