Residents of Mamlatdarwadi are opposing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to widen Road Number Six from 4.5 metres to 9 metres.
They argue that the project threatens the structural integrity of their buildings and the area’s green cover. Out of 16 buildings along the road, residents of four have filed petitions in the Bombay High Court, alleging that the BMC is proceeding without proper consultation or adherence to due process. The remaining buildings are preparing similar legal actions. Residents express concerns that the road expansion will encroach upon their compounds, eliminating parking spaces and bringing construction dangerously close to building foundations.
They also highlight the potential loss of 52 mature trees, which contribute to the neighborhood’s environmental health. Some locals suspect that the urgency of the project may be linked to facilitating a nearby high-rise development, suggesting that the road widening could be serving private interests rather than public need. The BMC, citing the 2034 Development Plan, maintains that the road widening is a planned infrastructure improvement. Following a High Court directive, the BMC conducted a survey to assess potential structural impacts on the buildings.
As the legal proceedings continue, the residents of Mamlatdarwadi await the High Court’s decision, hoping for a resolution that balances urban development with community welfare and environmental preservation.
